Feature Review

Design

The colour is Lunar Grey — the same understated shade carried over from the previous model, and it looks perfectly at home whether you're in a café or a lecture theatre ✨. For this price range, the build quality is surprisingly solid, and this colour has earned a reputation for looking rather more premium than it costs. Nothing cheap about it, and the rigidity gives you the confidence to use it daily without worry.

Premium Lunar Grey design with a MacBook Pro-esque feelIt has a bit of a MacBook Pro vibe — smart without trying too hard

Below is the previous model, but the chassis dimensions haven't changed, so you'd expect the same build quality here.

This model was one of my top 3 picks on ZippyLaptop

The lid has the same smooth, matte-ish finish as the previous model — fairly good at resisting fingerprints. Seems minor, but when you're touching it every day, it actually matters ⭕.

Smooth back surface that resists fingerprints wellSmooth back surface that resists fingerprints well

At 16.9 mm thick, it's not ultra-thin, but it's well within the normal range for a modern laptop. It slips easily into a rucksack, and you won't be cursing it on your commute 💼.

The rubber feet on the base are well made and keep the laptop from sliding around on your desk while you type. Seems trivial, but after a few weeks of daily use you genuinely notice it 😄.

Portability

The machine weighs 1.37 kg, which puts it towards the lighter end of the 14-inch category 🚶‍♂️‍➡️. Not featherweight exactly, but one-hand-carry territory — so nipping between rooms at the office or heading to lectures is no bother at all. You won't dread lifting it out of your bag every morning.

The previous model was equally comfortable to hold one-handed ✨

Display Quality

The display is the star of the show here. The 14-inch OLED panel delivers deep blacks and vivid colours that genuinely make you stop and think "hang on, is this really at this price?" — especially if you're used to IPS 😍. Films and streaming look brilliant, and this laptop handles media consumption more than well enough on its own.

OLED display with vivid colours and deep blacksOLED display with vivid colours and deep blacks

The OLED panel is carried over from the previous model, and the colour reproduction is genuinely impressive 👍

OLED is honestly stunning. I find my eyes feel less tired looking at it, too.

Resolution is 1920×1200 with a 16:10 aspect ratio — slightly taller than the usual 16:9, which means less scrolling on web pages and a bit more room when comparing documents side by side. DCI-P3 100% coverage means colour accuracy is high, which is handy for photo and video work.

Keyboard Comfort

The layout is standard and sensible — no quirky key placements to trip you up if you're switching from another laptop. Backlit too, so typing in a dark room or on the last train home isn't a problem. No numpad, but that's perfectly normal for a 14-inch machine.

Performance

The CPU is the AMD Ryzen AI 7 445. PassMark multi-thread score comes in at 20,770 — solidly mid-to-high range.

PassMark CPU Mark Multi-thread Guide
Score Rating What it feels like in real use
Up to 5,500 Tight on headroom Hiccups during multitasking; comfort takes a hit. Daily use feels constrained.
5,500–8,000 Daily use Web, Office, remote work — handles them without issue.
8,000–12,500 Comfortable (standard) Daily PC tasks with real headroom. Light video editing and casual games work.
12,500–20,000 High performance (mainstream) Multitasking feels good. Heavier work and 3D games are workable.
20,000–40,000 Very high performance This PC Comfortable even for demanding work and gaming.
40,000+ Exceptional Plenty of headroom for creative work and heavy loads. Long-lasting performance.

*PassMark CPU Mark measures multi-threaded CPU performance. Some variance is normal between runs even with the same CPU.

Video editing, photo editing, and coding are all well within reach at this performance level. Day-to-day tasks run smoothly, and lighter creative work won't feel constrained at all.

Integrated graphics is the RADEON 840M, with a PassMark G3D score of 3,805 — about what you'd expect from integrated graphics.

PassMark G3D Mark (Integrated GPU) Guide
Score Rating What it feels like in real use
Up to 1,500 Bare minimum Limited 3D performance. Not suited for gaming or heavy 3D work.
1,500–3,500 Light 3D Lighter games and low-load tasks work with conservative settings.
3,500–5,500 Average This PC Light to medium games and GPU-light work are fine. Solid integrated GPU for daily use.
5,500–7,500 High performance Strong for an integrated GPU. Lighter games and image work feel comfortable.
7,500+ Very high performance Upper-tier integrated GPU. Real graphics headroom even in thin laptops.

*PassMark G3D Mark measures 3D rendering. This guide is for integrated GPUs — discrete GPU models are not directly comparable.

Demanding 3D games and heavy video encoding are off the table, but casual gaming and light editing are worth a try. RAM starts at 16 GB, which means you can have plenty of browser tabs open alongside other apps without things grinding to a halt. There's a 32 GB option if you need more headroom.

Battery Life

Battery rating: above average

At 60 Wh, the battery is on the generous side as a baseline. OLED panels do tend to draw a bit more power, so real-world life will vary — something to keep in mind. That said, for lighter workloads, getting through a full day without hunting for a plug should be doable.

High brightness or extended video playback will burn through it faster. USB-C charging (PD) is supported, so a compact USB-C charger in your bag will see you right 🙆‍♂️.

This Anker USB-C charger weighs 112 g — USB-C charging really is a lifesaver.

Port Selection

The port setup is one of the highlights here. 2× USB-C (video output + PD charging), 2× USB-A, HDMI, MicroSD card slot, and a headphone jack — the kind of setup where you rarely need a USB-C hub to connect most things. Video output works over both HDMI and USB-C, so plugging into a meeting room projector or your monitor at home is rarely going to be an issue.

Comprehensive port selection: HDMI, USB-A, USB-C, and MicroSDComprehensive port selection: HDMI, USB-A, USB-C, and MicroSD

Webcam

The webcam is 1080p FHD — clear enough for online meetings. There's also a physical privacy shutter so you can cut the camera feed mid-call without fumbling for a bit of tape. Nice touch that you end up appreciating more than you'd expect.

Security

Facial recognition via Windows Hello is on board — open the lid, glance at the screen, and you're in. No typing passwords every morning, which makes starting the day just that bit more painless 😄.

Price

OLED display, Ryzen AI 7, and 1.37 kg — all in one machine. Honestly, the value here is pretty impressive for this class. It might look steep at first glance, but when you factor in the OLED and the performance, you start thinking "is that really all it costs? That seems like a fair deal 😉" — well worth adding to your shortlist if you're still deciding.

Verdict

IdeaPad Slim 5a Gen 11 is a brilliantly balanced machine for anyone who wants to carry their laptop around daily while still enjoying a genuinely gorgeous OLED screen. Particularly good for uni students, commuters, and anyone who likes their films and photos looking their best. The one gripe worth mentioning is the glossy display — it can catch reflections in bright environments — but honestly, everything else about this laptop is close to ideal 😁. For day-to-day use and lighter creative tasks, this is more than enough laptop.
